Social media was on fire Tuesday all due to a photo connected to hurricane Harvey that went viral.
The photo taken by a local reporter in the Houston suburb of Cypress and posted on Twitter purportedly showed a Best Buy in Texas charging “$42.96 per pack” for a case of Dasani water and a case of Smartwater priced at “$29.98/per pack,” accompanied by a sign which read “limited supply.”
Many on Twitter who saw the photo were understandably upset by what they believed was price gouging of those in need.
Ken Klippenstein confirmed that others were also aware of the post and tweeted:
Texas AG tells me they received 550 complaints & 25 emails about price gouging, with more coming in consistently.
One Houston resident sent me a pic of water he saw being sold for *$42* at a nearby Best Buy. They were kind enough to offer $29 bottles too pic.twitter.com/8dKz3sJJM1

However, Best Buy quickly released a statement to resolve the entire issue.
In a statement, a Best Buy representative stated the following:
“The pricing was “a big mistake.” The price was seen only on Friday and was because an employee had mistakenly priced the entire case of water by multiplying the price of a single bottle.
Best Buy does not typically sell cases of water, the statement says, so the point-of-sale system had no price for the entire case.
As a company we are focused on helping, not hurting affected people.
We’re sorry, and it won’t happen again.”
What is the lesson Best Buy hopefully learned?
That they should never try to pull a fast one on the public in the future and at least some of their employees may need help with math, right now!
