A gym in east Atlanta is making news. Not because of its great service but because of a profanity-laced handwritten sign which hung in its window and explained its controversial policy against police and military.
The EAV Barbell Club posted a crude handwritten sign in its window which read:
“Rules: Do whatever the hell you want, correctly, except Crossfit cultism. No f—— cops.”
The sign was reported by a military veteran to the local news station in Atlanta and the owner removed it after it brought the gym negative attention.
The owner however, has said he will replace it with something similar but will leave off the profanity this time.
How about also leaving out the ‘discriminatory’ practice against a segment of society you don’t like?
Jim Chambers, the owner of the gym sees his ban on military and police as a political statement and has reportedly said:
“We’ve had an explicitly stated ‘No Cop’ policy since we opened, and we also don’t open membership to active members of the military.”
He told the news:
“We wanted one space that was just a little different. You know, it’s not an aggressive, hetero jock space that’s dominated by cops and soldiers. It’s a place where you’re safe from that.
And we don’t want to make police stronger so that they can hurt people more efficiently.
It’s not a personal thing if you put a uniform on. Quite honestly I view that as an occupying enemy army when you put that uniform on.”
Many on the news organizations’ Facebook page didn’t appreciate Chambers’ unequal treatment of military and police and believe he should respect all people.
Sylvia Auton said: “Its only bad I guess when a Christian refuses to bake a cake for gay or trannies. Like who would want to deal with those confussed (sic), emotional people.”
Gail Doggett said: “This is going to have to be settled in the courts. If this guy can ban cops and its legal because it is his business, then a baker should be able to make the same rules for his business. This is getting so ridiculous that soon no one will serve anyone any more. Stupid!”
But not everyone thought the gym’s policy was bad.
Joshua Robinson posted: “I will be joining this gym soon…#freespeech #PattyRollaPolice #GodBlessthisactivism”
Since the military and police are not a protected class as are minorities, this gym owner’s policy while disgusting, appears not to be illegal.
Regardless of the policy, I’m guessing this gym owner wouldn’t hesitate to contact police if he needed them.
