Who knows you better than you? Well, it appears that the Rev. Al Sharpton believes the answer is only you, know you better than anyone else.
And perhaps, he believes what he knows about himself should be handsomely rewarded.
Let me explain.
Sharpton recently sold the rights to his life’s story, which no doubt includes the time he believed the false allegations about Tawana Brawley, to himself or more accurately to his charity the National Action Network or NAN.
Sharpton’s generous non-profit agreed to pay Sharpton $531,000 for his “life story rights for a 10-year period,” according to the non-profit’s latest tax filing. (At least it appears that someone is paying their taxes).
It’s unclear when Sharpton may pocket the cash which is above and beyond the $244,661 he received as compensation from the organization in 2017.
Nonprofit experts said the transaction could be troubling because NAN — whose mission includes criminal justice reform and police accountability — was doing business with its own president.
To top it all off, an additional pay day is possible for NAN and perhaps Sharpton because NAN has the ability to turn around and sell the rights to Hollywood producers or anyone else who wants to buy Sharpton’s story. Although, it’s unclear who those takers may be at the moment.
But Sharpton is not taking credit for the ingenious money-making idea. He’s ‘blaming’ that on the Board of Directors of NAN but wouldn’t name the directors when asked.
He claims the board came up with the idea as a way to continue the revenue stream after Sharpton steps down in about a year.
Sharpton boasted that he had contracts for two movies, with a third in the works. He said one of these movies is already in production although he wouldn’t give details to any of the projects.
I guess we’ll just have to take Sharpton at his word.
