GOP Congressional Candidate Assaulted, Maxine Waters to Blame?

As political arguments become heated and Democrats like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) call on other Democrats to “harass” Trump officials in public, should it come as a surprise to anyone that some people with a propensity to commit violence may interpret what she said as a ‘green light’ to harm others within the Republican Party?

On Sunday, police were notified that there was an attempted stabbing of a Republican congressional candidate at the Castro Valley Fall Festival in Alameda County in northern California.

Rudy Peters, who is running for California’s 15th congressional district against was sitting at his campaign booth when 35 year old Farzad Fazeli allegedly approached him in “an aggressive manner” and made disparaging remarks about Peters and the Republican Party, according to witnesses at the scene.

Fazeli reportedly pulled out a knife and attempted to injure Peters with it, but the knife malfunctioned.

Peters then got into a physical altercation with Fazeli.

According a News Release from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Fazeli “fled the scene but was detained a short time later by deputies. A switchblade knife was located on his person.”

Fazeli was then placed under arrest and charged with felony assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and possession of a switchblade knife. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

No injuries resulted from the incident.

Reports indicate that Fazeli is a Castro Valley resident.

In lieu of an official statement, Peters’ Democratic opponent and California Congressman, Eric Stalwell, posted the following on Twitter on Tuesday:

“On Sunday, my opponent was attacked at his campaign booth in Castro Valley. I’m glad to hear Mr. Peters is okay. But it’s NEVER okay to use violence to settle political disagreements (or any disagreement). Fortunately, arrested the suspect.”

Many leaving comments on the NBC Bay Area website blamed Maxine Waters, Democrats and mainstream media for the attempted stabbing:
