Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters is paying her daughter Karen a large sum of money for her participation in a mass mailing in support of Waters and against those opposed to her mother for Waters’ upcoming re-election bid in 2018.
Karen’s services are listed on Federal Election Commission disclosure statements from Waters’ campaign committee, Citizens for Waters, as “a slate mailer management fee.”
The FEC filings also indicate that Waters’ daughter is being paid an additional amount for “other professional services.”
What is the total amount Waters is paying her daughter? A mere $100,000. (#sarcasm)
Who knew overseeing the stuffing of envelopes and collecting money from those seeking an endorsement from Waters could pay so well? (#sarcasm)
According to the FEC documents, disbursements to Karen are as follows:
$42,862 from Citizens for Waters made through a series of nine payments. Payments were made between May 2017 and January 2018.
A payment of $5,000 was made on January 19, 2018.
According to Schedule D of the FEC filings which indicates “Debts and Obligations,” Karen Waters is owed $65,000 for “professional services for slate mailer.”
Many Democratic candidates pay to receive Waters’ endorsement and appear on her mailer.
However, Waters endorsement isn’t cheap.
California Senator Kamala Harris paid Waters $28,000 in 2010 for just that privilege.
Big payments for her work on Waters’ campaigns are nothing new for Karen.
“In 2016, Karen made $43,579 from Citizens for Waters. She made $174,000 during the 2014 election cycle. In 2012, she received $9,500 while her public relations firm, Progressive Connections, received another $13,500.”
I guess it pays to know someone in high places.
While Waters is out there “reclaiming her time” and calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment every opportunity she gets, perhaps her constituents should think about how their contributions are being used and start “reclaiming their dime.”
