Rosenstein in the ‘Hot Seat’ After GOP Files Articles of Impeachment?

On Wednesday, 11 Republican Congress members followed through with what they had been promising for a while. They delivered Articles of Impeachment to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

In summary, the Articles of Impeachment list the following reasons for the actions taken by the GOP members against Rosenstein.

  1. Repeated failure by Rose to produce documents requested by Congress;
  2. “The Department of Justice, under the supervision of Mr. Rosenstein, attempted to conceal certain facts as documents provided to Congress were heavily and unnecessarily redacted”;
  3. “In his capacity as Deputy Attorney General of the United States, Mr. Rosenstein oversaw the potentially improper authorization of FISA searches and electronic surveillance of members of the Trump campaign”
  4. Failure to comply with subpoenas issued by Congress.

The House may not consider the articles until their return in September when Congress reconvenes. For now, they have referred them to the Judiciary Committee.

Apparently, Democrats were not expecting the GOP members to take the actions they did but they were nonetheless ready with their “All Things Russia” script.

Ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) almost immediately tweeted:

“These articles of impeachment against Rod Rosenstein were filed in bad faith and show extraordinary lengths to which House Republicans will go to protect Trump. History will record these Members as willing accomplices in the most serious threat to the rule of law in a generation.”

Other members of the “swamp” also tweeted about the articles.

Picking up the script where Schiff left off, former Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder tweeted:

“See this for what it is. An attempt by complicit Republicans led by Meadows and Jordan to delegitimize a probe being conducted by DOJ. These Trump lackeys have to decide what they value: the rule of law or doing everything to protect Trump. Be strong DOJ.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also weighed in by tweeting (again from the same script):

“There are no grounds for House Republicans to impeach Rod Rosenstein. Trying to remove him for failing to disclose sources, methods and evidence from a criminal investigation is beyond the pale. This is partisan nonsense. It’s dangerous for the rule of law and it needs to stop.”

“Lindsey Graham told me it’s more likely that he’ll be in the NBA playing basketball than Rod Rosenstein will be impeached. He also told me the Mueller probe isn’t a witch hunt and he’s intent on letting him do his job.”

Whether the Articles of Impeachment will eventually lead to Rosenstein’s removal is anyone’s guess.

However, if nothing else, Rosenstein should receive the message intended by the Congress members which is “swampy” behavior will no longer be tolerated.

Let’s hope Rosenstein has had enough with this latest move by the GOP and takes an early retirement.
