Sen. Lindsey Graham Poised To Take Over as Senate Judiciary Chairman

Senator Lindsey Graham who once called the Kavanaugh hearings an unethical sham due to Democrats’ actions, is poised to become the next Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Chuck Grassley who is the current committee’s chair, announced on Friday that he would step down to take over the chairmanship of the Finance Committee.

Graham, who has recently become a close ally of President Trump, would be in charge of the panel handling judicial nominations and presumably hold the position for at least the next two years as he is up for re-election as a senator in 2020.

After the announcement, Graham said:

“If I am fortunate enough to be selected by my colleagues to serve as chairman, I will push for the appointment and Senate confirmation of highly qualified conservative judges to the federal bench and aggressive oversight of the Department of Justice and FBI.

I will push for the appointment and Senate confirmation of highly qualified conservative judges to the federal bench and aggressive oversight of the Department of Justice and FBI.”

This would mean that Graham would also have jurisdiction over special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into “all things Russia.”

Perhaps, in preparing to take the chairmanship position, this would explains why Graham was reportedly helping President Trump in the selection of the nominee for the next U.S. Attorney General after Jeff Sessions was asked to resign.

Shortly, after Sessions resigned, Graham told a local South Carolina news organization in part:

“I look forward to working with President Donald Trump to find a confirmable, worthy successor so that we can start a new chapter at the Department of Justice and deal with both the opportunities and challenges our nation faces.”

Graham also told the reporter that:

“As to me, I will be part of a larger Republican majority in the United States Senate — working with the President and my Republican and Democratic colleagues — to make America safer and more prosperous.”

That should be music to most Americans’ ears.
